History

The TR6 replaced the TR5 from November 1968. The mechanics and a lot of the basic design was based on the TR5 but the external appearance was changed significantly by the introduction of a new body shell styled by Karmann Ghia. Approximately 95000 were built between 1968 and 1976.

Specification

The engine and running gear are the same as the TR5 with a six cylinder 2498cc fuel injected engine and a 4 speed gearbox with optional overdrive. Cars manufactured between November 1968 and November 1972 (These have chassis numbers starting CP) have 150 bhp engines. Cars manufactured between November 1972 to July 1975 (These have chassis numbers starting CR) have the 125 bhp engine. From July 1975 to July 1976 cars were fitted with Carburettors. Cars with overdrive originally had the A type drive until 1973 when it changed to the J type. Wire wheels were also an option until 1973.

What to look for

As with all TRs the body work and chassis are the main things to check when buying a TR6, although it is now possible to buy a complete TR6 body shell from the Motor Heritage Trust.

As with the TR5 there have been problems with the fuel injection, but it is possible to solve these with various improved components that have been developed.
