History

The TR5 introduced the 6 cylinder engine to the TR range in 1967. The previous 4 cylinder engine needed upgrading to keep up with competition. Virtually identical in appearance to the 4a, there are a small number of detail differences that the avid TR spotter will notice that set it apart, like the offset TR5 badge on the bonnet, a slightly different radiator grille and ‘2500’ badges on the rear wings. Only 2947 were built between August 1967 and September 1968, with just 1165 being sold in the UK, so the 5 is a rare and sought after car.

Arguably the fastest production TR ever, the motoring press raved over the cars’ combination of classic Michellotti style and outstanding performance. There were some reliability issues as a result of overheating Lucas fuel pumps, but this should no longer be a problem and most cars will now be fitted with modern Bosch equivalents.

Specification

The new six cylinder 2498cc engine with dry–liner cast iron block was based on the Triumph 2000 but with a new crankshaft, con-rods and pistons. The resulting long stroke, when combined with the Lucas Fuel Injection (another production first for TR) meant the engine produced some 150BHP with tremendous torque. The gearbox was the same as the TR4a with optional overdrive. The bodywork, suspension, and brakes were basically the same as the TR4a, with minor differences such as a brake servo as standard and a slightly higher axle ratio of 3.45:1 (compared to 3.7:1).

What to look for

As with all TRs the bodywork and chassis are the main things to check when buying a TR5. Particular attention should be paid to the differential mountings because the amount of torque put through the diff can cause the mountings to break off.

Some problems were encountered with the fuel injection systems, as mentioned above although most cars will have been sorted by now. Once properly set up the fuel injection system should be good for 20.000 miles without attention, so it's work best left to a specialist.
