HistoryThe TR4 represented a major move away from the old sidescreen cars with a new Michellotti designed body with wind up windows! It was also the first car in Britain to have air vents in the dashboard. It was introduced in 1961 and around 40000 were built between then and January 1965. Underneath the chassis and engine were the same as the TR3a.SpecificationThe engine and gearbox on the TR4 was the same as the TR3a - 2138cc. As with the 3a there was a 4 speed gearbox and an optional overdrive unit. The bodywork, suspension, and brakes were the same as the 3a. The big step forward with the 4s is the introduction of rack and pinion steering which gives a much more positive drive. What to look forAs with earlier TRs the body work and chassis are the main things to check when buying a TR4. Most bits can be repaired or replaced – it depends how good you are at metal work or how deep your wallet is if you have to get someone else to do it!The engines are essentially the same as the earlier TRs and are fairly reliable. A lot of cars have had the engine fan removed and/or replaced by an electric fan. There is a lot of discussion amongst aficionados as to whether this is the cause of frequently reported breaks in the crankshaft. That said mine has an electric fan and (touch wood) I haven’t had any problems. Earlier cars were fitted with Twin 175 Stromberg Carburettors; later models come with SUs. It is matter of personal preference which is better; both can be overhauled or replaced if need be. |
