HistoryThe TR3a succeeded the TR3 from October 1957 and looks very similar. It is another ‘sidescreen’ car and the main difference is the grill that stretches right across the front of the car. Around 58000 were built between 1957 and 1961.The TR3b is a variant that was built for the US market and around 3500 were made between March and October 1962. SpecificationThe original engine and gearbox on the TR3a was the same as the TR3 - 1991cc - although this produced 95BHP at 4800 rpm. In 1959 a bored out version of the engine was introduced at 2138cc which turned out 100 BHP at 4600rpm. As with the TR3 there was a 4 speed gearbox and an optional overdrive unit. The bodywork, suspension, steering and brakes were the same, although later models had 9” rear drums.The TR3b initially had the 1991cc engine but this was quickly replaced by the larger 2138cc unit. What to look forThe main problem as with any car this age is the body work and chassis. Like the earlier sidescreen cars it has a separate chassis and the wings (should) just bolt on. Other panels can be obtained fairly easily from suppliers across the country.The engines are essentially the same as the earlier TRs and are fairly reliable. They will put up with a lot providing they are regularly serviced. The crank shaft is a weak point and is known to break around the no 4 bearing. Routine service parts are readily available from a number of suppliers across the country. Some ‘fixtures and fittings’ can be more difficult to obtain so it is a good idea to delve through auto jumbles and see what you can find. You may not need it now but you never know. |
