History

The TR250 was a variant of the TR5 aimed exclusively at the US market. Basically a TR5 with carburettors, the increase in performance over the 4a was disappointing despite the 15% increase in capacity. Approximately 8500 were built between 1967 and 1968.

Specification

As for the TR5 the engine was the new six cylinder 2498cc engine with dry liner cast iron block was based on the Triumph 2000 but with a new crankshaft, con-rods and pistons. The gearbox was the same as the TR4a with optional overdrive. The bodywork, suspension, and brakes were basically the same as the TR4a, with minor differences such as a brake servo as standard and a slightly higher axle ratio of 3.45:1 (compared to 3.7:1).

The TR250 had to be designed to meet the tougher standards of the American market, in particular regarding safety and emissions. The result was a much lower power output of around 106 BHP using a pair of Stromberg CD175 carburettors. The car also featured all the cosmetic changes seen on the 5

What to look for

With the TR250 output going to the States they are not a common car in the UK. As with all TRs the bodywork and chassis are the main things to check. Particular attention should be paid to the differential mountings because the amount of torque put through the diff can cause the mountings to break off.
