Bulletin 65

Wintery weather no problems for Group members!

Very few of even the hardiest Essex Group members have ventured out in their TRs during the recent very wintry spell of snow, ice and fog. Although the white stuff has now gone (for good, I hope!), with the weather conditions set to remain cold and generally pretty horrible, I can see the obvious attraction of the F.H.C. TR7 and 8s – they are truly the “all the year round” TR!

Although our TRs have been tucked away, attendances at our regular monthly meets have been well up to scratch and I am very pleased to welcome new members Steve Reed and Danny Rigden (TR4a and TR6 respectively) who braved the freezing conditions to join the Essex faithful at our “Rabbits” meeting on the 12th January – well done lads!

Video evening focus on the TR7 and 8

Our meeting at “TOW” on the 26th January was devoted to one of our (now traditional) annual Classic Video shows. Well over thirty members sat attentively for near on an hour watching a very interesting film devoted to the history and development of the TR7 and 8 models. Bearing in mind that Wedges represent a very small minority in the Essex Group, the organising Committee was relieved and pleased that the offering was so well received by so many of the “traditionalist” members! Perhaps the day is not too far off when we will see sidescreen TRs sporting stickers saying “My other car is a TR7”. It seemed entirely appropriate that yet another “new” face should join the Group that evening – George Civil has just acquired dear old Glyn Harris’s TR7, presently a non-runner, and he is looking forward to the help and advice he will receive from the Essex Group “intelligentsia” during the imminent refurbishment of the car.

Alternative arrangements for February 23rd meeting

Regular readers will recall that “TOW” is shut during this month for some alterations to the bar area. February is the month when we hold our annual Technical Evening and I am delighted to say that Dave Mountain has stepped into the breach left by the closure of “TOW” and very generously invited the Group to a guided tour of his Hutton tuning and race prep facility. Click here for a map showing David’s works and the suggested route from the Shenfield (A1023) turn-off of the A12. For those of you wishing to use sat nav, the address is Revolve Technologies Ltd, Prospect Way, Hutton, CM13 1XA. We will assemble in the car park of Revolve Technologies at 19.30hrs and commence the walk round at 20.00hrs. Dave reckons about an hour will do it and he knows of a suitable local hostelry for post-tour drinks and chat. Please be on time as, once the tour begins, the security doors will be locked and latecomers will not be able to gain access.

Last chance to get your club calendar

There is still a disappointing number of 2010 Essex Group Calendars unsold so, if you still have not yet bought your copy, please do so by the end of this month after which time left-overs will be recycled. I will have copies available at the above meeting and at “TOW” on the 23rd but if you can’t make these evenings, just give me a bell and I will pop your copy in the post.

Latest Essex Group News available

By the time you receive this Bulletin, you should be in possession of the latest (in more senses than one!) Essex Group News. I am sure you will all agree this is a pretty impressive publication for a bunch of amateurs and join me in thanking Carol King and the production team for another superb edition. If you haven’t seen your copy by the end of next week, please contact me – we always seem to lose one or two in the post!

Advance notice of the AGM in March

Depending on the efficiency of the postal service, you should also have recently received the A.G.M. documentation. Please give some thought to any changes you would like to see introduced that would improve the way in which the Group is run and also give some consideration as to whether you could make your own contribution by standing for a Committee position. I already know of one vacancy which will need filling and all of the present Committee have been in post for over three years (most for over five years) - some new faces on the “top table” would be most welcome and a benefit to the Group at large. We generally meet in Committee only once a month and the duties are not that onerous – honestly! What is needed is new blood and new ideas – if you are interested, just have a quiet word with me or Andy for more details. The A.G.M. will be held on Tuesday March 23rd at “TOW” and, as in previous years, a finger buffet will be served after the evening’s proceedings.
