Club newsAlthough this is generally a quiet time of year as far as TRing goes, I am delighted to report that we are still getting very good turn-outs at both “The Rabbits” and “TOW”. In fact, at the last “Windmill” meeting two new members joined the active ranks of The Essex Group and so a warm welcome goes to Mike Smith and Alan Gibson. Mike has recently joined The Register and is actively looking for a decent TR6, whereas Alan has been a Member for some time and already has a rather nice one!! Alan’s car has been in The Register for some years and was totally restored just before Alan became its proud owner.TR Register AGMAndy D and I attended the Register’s A.G.M. at Gaydon on Sunday 22nd November. The “From the Chairman” section of Traction 239 covers this event so I won’t waste space here other than to say that we were impressed by the very professional way in which this Club is being run on our behalf by the Board of Management.Christmas celebrationsAs Christmas day falls on a Friday this year, it has been decided that the usual 4th Tuesday of the month evening meeting at “TOW” will go ahead as normal on the 22nd. By the time the Christmas weekend has gone by, I guess we will all be a bit sick of turkey and Christmas pud. You can’t beat a curry as a change from Yuletide fare so we are planning a lunchtime visit to “The Royal Tiger”, Rettendon on Tuesday 29th December. If you fancy a run out (in the TR, weather permitting!) please give me a ring on 01245 324593 for further details – timing, cost etc.Speaking of Christmas Dinners, a very congenial time was enjoyed at “TOW” on the evening of 5th December when forty-seven of us squeezed into the “long restaurant” for our annual Christmas Dinner. This was a cost-effective and relatively low keyed departure from the traditional Dinner Dance format but, judging from the feedback I have received, was a successful experiment. Not everybody was entirely satisfied with their meals/service and this is currently being investigated by the Committee but the overwhelming majority of members seemed to have an excellent time with the “Noise=Enjoyment” meter off-scale for most of the evening!! Unfortunately, two of the Group’s “senior” members, Gerald and Judith Dawe, were unable to attend due to sudden illness and I am sure you would all like to join me in wishing Gerald a swift recovery in time for the rest of the Christmas celebrations. Got your calendar yet?I have only about half a box of 2010 Essex Group Calendars left unsold. At a fiver a go, these make excellent Christmas presents for the relatives and any petrol heads of your acquaintance. They will be available at “The Rabbits” and “TOW” at the December meets but, if you are unable to attend, let me know and I will put your order on one side or post it on to you. There have been a couple of hold-ups with the production of the Winter edition of Essex Group News but we are keeping our fingers crossed that it will be available, together with next season’s Events Calendar, at the “TOW” meeting on 22nd December.TOW meetings in the new yearIn January, the “TOW” meeting will be given over to our annual Classic Video Evening. As well as an offering from the archives, the TR7 and 8 enthusiasts will be catered for with the screening of an unusual film which Steve Tant has acquired. I’ve previewed this and found it (surprisingly!) interesting. The “Windmill” will be closed for re-decoration for an estimated three weeks from the 14th February and there will therefore be no “TOW” meeting in February. The Committee is very pleased and grateful to David Mountain - he of “MountTune” fame - who has very kindly offered to lead a conducted tour of his tuning facility in Shenfield on the evening of 23rd February. Dave tells me that there is a convenient pub nearby where we can conclude the evening’s business! Watch for more details in my January Bulletin. Assuming the renovations are complete, the next meeting at “TOW” will be on March 23rd when we will be holding our A.G.M. – no groaning, please! Most of the present Committee have been in post for five years and it really would be a good idea to see some new faces on the “top table”. We generally meet in Committee once a month and the duties are not that onerous – honestly! What is needed is new blood and new ideas – if you are interested, just have a quiet word with me or Andy for more details. Christmas present ideasIt’s still not too late to treat the TR driver in your life (and yourself) to a Christmas gift of Essex Group logoed leisure clothing.
