Duxford Standard Triumph day

Standard Triumph Marque Day at the ever-popular Duxford Aerodrome on Sunday 24th May was very well supported by hundreds of Standard/Triumph owners – the Essex Group with its 25 TRs was certainly one of the bigger, if not the largest, single marque clubs attending. It was a beautiful, sunny day and a super opportunity to enjoy some proper TR motoring. The two convoys, one from Boreham the other from Stansted, joined forces about a mile from Duxford and arrived mob-handed. The car parking and marshalling left a bit to be desired but, after some words from Stevie T, the whole Group was able to park-up together. The subsidised entrance fee allowed access to the museum areas and I was particularly impressed with the “new” Land War hall. If you have not visited Duxford Imperial War Museum(s) in the last five years, you really should go at the next opportunity, as there is now a lot more to see than in past years.

Good turn out for the Club night

An exceptionally fine evening resulted in a superb turn-out of 19 TRs at TOW on Tuesday 26th May. One car which drew lots of admiring looks was a “new to the Group” TR4 owned by Ralph Elmore. A warm welcome goes out to Ralph and I expect we will see lots more of him and his 4, during the rest of the season. It is very heartening to see the regular good attendances at both The Rabbits and TOW and, if we get the good summer we have been promised, I think Committee Members will be kept very busy on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays!

Rebuild news

Bernie Steeples is on the brink of taking delivery of his newly re-built TR2. The car had passed its MOT and the last few odds and sods are being attended to. Bernie hopes he will be in the car for this month’s TOW meeting and is definite that he and the 2 will be at the International at the end of July. This news has put Terry B into a decline as his marathon 30+ year re-build has temporarily stalled due to a long-awaited visit from his son, daughter-in-law and baby grand daughter. They live in Manley, Australia and this is the first time Terry and Pat have seen (in the flesh) baby Laila, so I suppose that El Tel can be forgiven for neglecting the TR for a few weeks!

Danbury Garden Fete - 14th June

Danbury Garden Fete (organised by our own Peter Jones) is on Sunday the 14th June and Andy D will be leading a convoy from Boreham Services on the A12 to “Mayesfield” off Mays Lane in Danbury. Meet up at 10.00hrs for a 10.15hrs departure. This is a charity event and excellent ploughmen’s lunches and other refreshments will be available at the Village Hall. The gardens close at 17.00hrs and anyone who fancies a Royal Tiger Sunday Buffet to round off the day should touch base with me at the event.

Brands Hatch - 21st June

Steve Tant is planning a trip to Brands Hatch on the 21st June to watch the 750 MC Car Championships. The plan is to RV at Thurrock Services (M25) in time for a 09.30 departure so if you fancy a day at Brands, have a word with Steve (0208 550 3046) for full details.

Essex Day - 5th July

Essex Day (Sunday 5th July) is fast approaching and I hope you have all made a note on your calendars to attend this annual event which is held by kind permission of the Lord Lieutenant of Essex at Ingatestone Hall. The Group will be supplying burgers and dogs and BBQ facilities and endless trail coffee (a big hit at last year’s event) as well as a large marquee – just in case the weather does not live up to predictions!! This year we will be charging £1 for burgers and dogs and all receipts will be split between Billericay Scouts and Lord Petre’s current Essex- based charity. This is an excellent opportunity for a relaxing day out in the TR in the lovely grounds of one of the County’s finest stately homes, so do make every effort to come along!

Evening BBQ - 14th July

Tuesday 14th July, apart from being a very important anniversary in the life of one of our Members (you know who I mean Nigel!) sees the annual Porsche Owners’ Club BBQ at the Regiment Way Golf Centre in Chelmsford. The Group has been invited to this bash and it is likely that many who would normally attend The Rabbits on this evening may wish to RV with others from the Group at Boreham Services at 19.00hrs for the short run to the Golf Club. Last year the grub was very good and reasonably priced and a most enjoyable and interesting time was had. Do bring your own booze – the queues at the bar were horrendous and three people nearly died of thirst waiting to be served!!
