AGM at the Old Kings Head

I am pleased to report a very good turn-out for the Group’s AGM which was held at “TOKH” at the end of March. The existing Committee Members were all re-elected unopposed and the business of the AGM was dealt with in record time and not without some humour! The Treasurer was the favourite of the evening when he announced that the subscription to Essex Group Newsletter & Events Fund would be pegged, for a further twelve months, at the existing rate of £10 p.a. If you missed the Meeting and would like to know what went on, draft copies of the minutes will be available via the website at the beginning of May. The pub laid on a very generous finger buffet which was consumed after the formal part of the evening – it will be a shame if the Management can’t sort out the parking problem in the next couple of months as, in all other respects, this venue is a reasonable successor to “The White Horse”.

Air Show Barge trip

There are still a few places left on the Southend Air Show Barge Trip on the 25th May, which is now open to family & friends. A £20 deposit secures your place and Steve T will give you full details of this fully-catered day afloat. Unfortunately the Manor House Hotel in Mundesley is now fully booked for our weekend away at the end of May so I am unable to take any further bookings.

Rebuild news

Barry Street’s royal blue TR4a is now back on the road after its mini re-build and complete re-spray. The car looks stunning and is better than when it left the factory in ’76 – all the panel gaps are now spot on!

My own engine re-build/transplant is now back on track (I collected the balanced crankshaft and conn rods from Gosnay’s on Monday) and another couple of weeks should see the Yellow Peril back in commission.

Group Leader Andy experienced a set back with his intended Girling rear axle transplant. After stripping the hubs (not an easy job and thanks to Graham Seeley for his help) it was discovered that the “new” unit was from a TR4 not a sidescreen car. As the track of the later cars is 2” wider………well, you can imagine the rest!!

Terry B is making real progress with his “30 years plus” re-build and is about to pass the engine over to Carlow Engineering for some special TLC. I have a feeling in my water that we will see this TR2 on the road before the year is out!

We should certainly be welcoming Bernie Steeples’ sidescreen car into the fold during the coming summer. The car is presently with Dave Dodds for major surgery. Bernie wasted no time in letting Terry know that his car was being “done” and now the race is on between the two old stagers!

Get well soon, Gloria

I was very sorry to learn that Gloria Mew recently had an accident at home which necessitated a stay in hospital and an operation on a badly broken ankle. I am sure that you would all like to join me and the Committee in wishing Gloria a speedy and complete recovery from this nasty mishap.

Maldon for fish and chips

The Essex Group will be meeting up with The North London Group this coming Sunday for a run out to Maldon’s Promenade Park for a Fish & Chip lunch. The logistics for the proposed “Fish & Chip Run” to Southend proved overwhelming so Maldon PP has been substituted. We will all meet up in the lorry park at the Boreham Services on the A12 at Chelmsford at noon. From there we will take a leisurely drive through Danbury to Maldon.
