Thanks to Ernie and Linda

August saw most of the active members of the Group attending a lunch time barbecue at Hockley - very kindly arranged by Linda and Ernie. The weather in the days leading up to the 6th had been less than summery and it began to look as though the event may become a kitchen/garage barbecue! Fortunately, the luck of the Essex Group held and the uncertain weather perked up on the day and an excellent time was had by all – many thanks Linda and Ernie for all your hard work and hospitality.

3 days of celebration for Terry

August also saw three days of birthday celebrations for the Essex Group founder and Life President - Terry Blake. Terry also founded a branch of the British Sub-Aqua Club back in the sixties and, although he gave up scuba diving some years ago, he has remained an active member of the Romford Branch. Because Terry has such a large circle of friends and retired work colleagues, the rolling, three day, party was the only practical way of celebrating his reaching three score years and ten! After his brush with the Grim Reaper at the beginning of the year, we were all delighted to see him in such good form and virtually back to his old, smiling, self. I am sure Terry would wish to join Essex Group members in thanking his wife Pat for devising and catering for such a marathon event – well done Pat!!

Ernie's new project

Most of you will have seen Ernie Turner’s superb, red, TR6. Ernie rebuilt this car to a very high standard during last year and it has always been much admired. At the Ironbridge Weekend in May, Ernie bought a sound (if a little tatty) TR5 from one of the Shropshire Group lads and he now is throwing all his energies (and dosh) into rebuilding this beast. So, the lovely red 6 has gone – but not too far, I am pleased to note! It has been bought by John O’Connor who has, I am delighted to report, joined the Essex Group and promises to be a regular at Group meetings – welcome aboard John.

...and don't forget the regular club nights

Our regular monthly meetings have continued to be very well supported even though the recent weather has not been particularly good. Let’s make the most of what’s left of those “top off” evenings and get along to “The Rabbits” and “The White Horse” for excellent food, beer and company and even when the nights draw in and the car stays firmly locked in the garage you can still come and talk about all those jobs you are going to do over the winter!
